YOU’RE A REACTIVE FOUNDER
Your nonprofit is making an impact, but you’re constantly responding to problems instead of proactively planning. It feels like you’re always in survival mode—trying to figure things out as you go, and honestly, things are getting harder and harder.
BUT just because things feel hard right now doesn’t mean you aren’t doing a lot of things right.
As a Reactive Founder, you are:
Passionate and Mission Driven: you care deeply about your cause and are committed to making a difference in your community.
Adaptable and Resourceful: You’re good at thinking on your feet and making things work even if you have limited resources and experience
Action Oriented: You don’t overthink all of your decisions- you jump in and get things done, and this keeps your organization moving.
With all of the great things you have going for you, being a Reactive Founder comes with some challenges:
Burnout and Exhaustion: You are doing TOO MUCH and doing all these things on your own leads to stress, fatigue, and burnout, making it hard to continue doing the amazing work you do in your organization.
Lack of Delegation: You struggle to let go of tasks, even when there are people who can (and should) help.
No Clear Systems or Priorities: Because you are constantly putting out fires, important long-term planning can take a backseat, leaving the organization stuck.
So, what can you do to strengthen your leadership and support your nonprofit?
✔ Shift from Reactive to Proactive: Set aside time each month to review your goals and plan for the next steps rather than always reacting. The better your plan is, the easier it will be to make traction on your goals.
✔ Build a Stability Plan: Create a basic financial roadmap outlining how to sustain your nonprofit for the next 12 months. Then execute on your plan- we have to treat your nonprofit like the business that it is.
✔ Develop a Support Network: Start assembling a team (even volunteers or board members) who can help share the workload and bring stability. Your goal as a leader and founder is to make sure you become replaceable. The more people you have to support the mission the less likely you are to burnout and have the organization become stagnant
